About the artwork

My second edition on the theme of Gladioli, this cut flower was grown from bulb in the Spring, this Gladioli was handpicked and painted in the studio as part of an ongoing series of still life painting of fresh cut flowers. This painting combines my passion for gardening and painting, and giving this flower a painterly treatment to bring out its shine and finish, I wanted to capture the deep, rich colours of the Gladioli’s petals , set off a light, grey/green background. The petal on the side of the terracotta vase shows the temporary, fleeting beauty that flowers bring to our gardens. It has been attacked and eaten by a garden pest, as seen by the hole, but nonetheless it still reflects its colour and beauty.
